Protect your business with a safety plan! Contact SERVPRO® for expert guidance on fire prevention and ensure your employees and property stay safe.
As a business owner in Talladega, Clay, or Randolph County, your responsibility extends beyond just serving your customers; it includes ensuring the safety of your employees and assets. Fires can strike unexpectedly, and being prepared can mean the difference between a minor incident and a catastrophic loss. SERVPRO of Talladega, Clay & Randolph Counties is Here to Help® you understand the importance of having the right fire equipment and safety plans in place.
Understanding Fire Risks in Your AreaStatistics show that businesses in Alabama face significant fire risks, particularly during the dry months from late summer to early fall. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), 30% of all reported fires occur in commercial buildings, with the leading causes being cooking, electrical malfunctions, and heating equipment. In our communities, the fire departments frequently respond to incidents during these peak months, underscoring the need for robust safety measures.
Fires can disrupt operations, lead to financial losses, and put lives at risk. Therefore, implementing a comprehensive fire safety plan is crucial for every business owner. SERVPRO of Talladega, Clay & Randolph Counties recommends starting with an assessment of your fire risks and identifying the necessary equipment and procedures to mitigate those risks effectively.
Essential Fire Equipment for Your BusinessInvesting in the right fire equipment is an essential first step in protecting your business. Here’s a list of must-have items:
Fire Extinguishers: Ensure that you have the appropriate type of fire extinguishers based on your business’s specific fire hazards. Regular inspections and maintenance are vital to ensure they are in working order.
Smoke Detectors and Alarms: Install smoke detectors and alarms throughout your premises. Regularly test them and replace batteries as needed.
Sprinkler Systems: If your business is in a larger commercial space, a sprinkler system can significantly reduce fire damage by controlling fires quickly.
Fire Blankets: Keep fire blankets accessible in areas where flammable materials are present.
Evacuation Plans: Create clear evacuation routes and ensure all employees are familiar with them. Conduct regular fire drills to practice these procedures.
Developing Your Fire Safety PlanA robust fire safety plan encompasses more than just equipment. Regular training for your staff on how to respond in case of a fire, including using extinguishers and evacuating the premises, is crucial. Moreover, having an emergency contact list and a designated assembly area outside the building can streamline response efforts.
At SERVPRO of Talladega, Clay & Randolph Counties, we understand the unique challenges faced by local businesses. Our team is dedicated to helping you develop an effective fire safety plan tailored to your specific needs. Don’t wait for a fire to occur; now is the time to prioritize safety.

<h3ahead-of-time">Prepare Ahead of Time
When you plan beforehand, you can recover that much faster after a disaster leaves your business dealing with damage. Teach your team what to do ahead of a fire, storm or flood so that work can flow seamlessly no matter what happens.
One of the most crucial parts of a disaster recovery plan is communication. Your employees need to know the plan inside and out so they can act quickly and without panic.
Regularly walk your building with your staff and make note of where water shut-offs and fire extinguishers are. Make sure fire escape routes are clear and well-marked in case a quick exit is ever needed. It might be helpful to assign staff members particular tasks in order to secure your building when a storm is headed your way.
After the threat has passed, make sure your team knows how they are expected to get back to work. If you are able to go remote for a while, check equipment and networks ahead of time to make sure they are ready to go as needed. If you will be utilizing a different physical location, eliminate any chances for confusion by giving out keys and other directions for the first day back.
Some kinds of natural disasters may take down communication networks long-term, so it is best to utilize multiple ways to keep in touch with your staff.
<h3quickly">Recover Quickly
When you have a plan, you can rest a little easier knowing that recovery has begun long before a disaster ever strikes. Make sure you call SERVPRO® as soon as the major threat is over so that we can start physical restorations right away.
As our professional team tackles putting your physical location back together, you can start filling your customers in on everything that has happened. Let them know what your plans for staying in business and reopening are across multiple platforms in order to reach the most people possible.
Disaster recovery isn’t the easiest process, but with an open mind and a little flexibility, you can get through it. Be willing to shift your operations for a while in order to allow enough recovery time. This new normal is only temporary and things will be bustling again before you know it.
Make a plan and practice it often to ride out any disaster that strikes. With solid communication and a total restoration team like ours by your side, you won’t have to miss a moment of building your business.

Are you prepared for disaster? SERVPRO of Talladega, Clay & Randolph Counties is here for you when disaster strikes!
Over the last five years, there has been a significant increase in natural disasters. Looking at the stats can be pretty alarming, too, as you will note that not only are natural disasters occurring more often, but they are getting stronger and leaving behind more damage then ever before.
Statistics don’t always represent our individual truths, though, and there is always a real possibility that your business will never be damaged during a natural disaster. Even if that does hold true, manmade disasters are still possible and can leave your business reeling.
Regardless of where they come from, thinking about the disasters that could affect your business is hard. But it is crucial to take time to consider your risks so that you can create a plan that protects you from them.
The Importance of a PlanAs we continue to face more and more natural disasters each year, making a plan for your business is the best way to protect yourself against them. An emergency plan can save lives and lower your chance of extreme loss. Getting to know the risks that threaten your business means you can take steps in order to be prepared for storms, fire or floods.
When a disaster hits, it not only leaves behind what can be massive amounts of damage, but it can also strap you with a large financial loss. When you create an emergency and business continuity plan, you will not only ensure your team’s safety but the safety of your financial future as well.
Creating a plan ahead of a disaster can also mean you get back to work faster after the event has passed. There are a large number of businesses that are never able to reopen after a forced closure due to either a natural or manmade disaster. With a plan, your business will never have to be included in that number.
An Emergency Ready PlanSo, how do you build a plan that meets all of your needs? A call to our team at SERVPRO® is the best way to get started. With our Emergency Ready Plan, you get a tailor-made protection plan that covers your every base. Your plan will start the moment you need it and see you through every step needed to get things back to normal.
In order to start building your plan, our team will first provide a total assessment of your business to identify your specific risks and needs. We will work with you to lay out the exact path you and your employees should take to weather any disaster well before, during and afterward.
When a disaster is headed your way, you can kick your plan into action and take steps to protect your staff and your building. Your plan will outline exactly what to do, assigning tasks like handling paperwork, electronics and building prep to you and your team in order to limit the amount of damage you might incur. With very few instructions, everyone will know how to respond the moment you say “go.”
Communication will also be a centerpiece of your plan, laying out exactly how to stay connected throughout the event. A chain of command will be established so that information is distributed quickly and correctly and everyone can continue to proceed with business.
As soon as it can safely be done, our SERVPRO crew will head to your property and start restoration efforts. While we get the repairs going, your team can get work going, whether that’s on site, remotely or in an alternate work location, as laid out in your plan.

Your plan not only gives you each step to take to keep work going, but it comes with the backing of a national brand and 24⁄7 availability to highly trained restoration professionals. Get your Commercial Crew Ready for a Weather Emergency | SERVPRO of Talladega, Clay & Randolph Counties
9/19/2023 (Permalink)
If your home or business was damaged in a storm, call SERVPRO of Talladega, Clay & Randolph Counties to get you back in action.
When you are prepared for anything, you can overcome everything. That couldn’t be more important than for someone who owns or runs a business. Not only do you need to be prepared in order to keep your company going, you also need a crew around you that is prepared to get through it all.
You likely train your staff for work-related issues extensively, but have you considered training them for potential severe weather risks? Weather-related disasters can be devastating for companies, and even result in long-term closures when a business is not prepared.
Create an emergency weather plan with your crew in order to keep everyone safe and avoid extreme losses.
Know Your RiskIn order to create a plan that covers every potential risk your business might face, you need to first get to know what weather hazards your climate might bring. Get to know what risks you will face seasonally, and take a look at past disasters to better understand what can happen to your property.
Alabama weather can be a mixed bag. With milder winters and hot summers, there really aren’t a lot of risks that can be ruled out. Severe thunderstorms, flooding, strong winds and hail as well as tornadoes are some of the top threats your business will face. These risks are higher in the spring and summer, but the potential is there for any of these weather disasters to strike year-round.
As you build your plan, take a look at flood maps in order to fully understand water risks along with other severe threats. Check local weather every day, and use long-term forecasts as a way to prepare as early as possible.
Make a Plan to CommunicateOnce you have better established the specific threats your business might face, create a communication plan that will get messages to everyone involved and keep everyone on the same page.
Your team should have two ways to receive weather alerts and two ways to receive communications internally. Make sure your team understands the different steps of your emergency plan so that they know exactly how to respond at every moment. Every staff member should know their role when it is time to gather supplies as well as how to get out when an evacuation is necessary.
Plan Your EvacuationNeeding to evacuate might feel like it is only for the most extreme situations, but sometimes it is the best way to keep everyone safe. Talk with your team about the safest ways to exit from every area of the building, and make sure routes are clearly labeled. Practice exiting on a regular basis so everyone knows how to respond quickly.
If evacuation is not safe, your building should have a sheltering location where everyone can ride out the storm. Make sure your staff knows where this is, and keep supplies close. Your sheltering space should be on a low level without windows and should be clearly labeled.
Regardless of how much of an emergency plan you have to put in place during an event, your team should be prepared enough to avoid panicking. Maintaining calm and keeping anxiety low is the best way to ensure everyone does what they need to in order to stay safe. Prepare your team and rest easy knowing your business can handle one more hurdle as it comes your way.
Don’t let extreme weather take control! If storms strike your business, SERVPRO® can help you restore your losses.

How To Prevent Water Damages To Commercial Property

Preventing Water Damage During Construction
Whether you are getting ready for a renovation in your commercial building or the new development of a large facility, the prevention of water damage is necessary. An unexpected storm or a neglected water pipe repair can lead to several inconveniences during the construction process:
- Property damage
- Rework
- Debris removal
- Delays
Therefore, before starting any new build or renovation, make sure there is a plan in place for any potential water issues. The preparations should focus on four vital aspects of the construction project: pre-planning, administrative responsibilities, organization of project materials and inspections and controls.
Pre-planning
While a possible broken pipe is one concern during construction, there are many others, including weather, property grading, exposed pipes, etc. Therefore, speaking with experienced contractors and remediation specialists is likely beneficial during the planning phase to reduce water loss risks.
Administrative Responsibilities
A needed water pipe repair should not result in significant setbacks during the construction project. These issues should never reach the point of causing severe damage. The best way to avert these crises is to assign responsibility and oversight to a team lead.
Organization of Deliveries and Storage
Beyond pre-planning and assigning administrative responsibility, someone needs to oversee material delivery and storage. If you order materials all at once and store them in a low area, like a basement, then there is a risk of severe loss. A flooded basement or storage space can cost a company thousands in material replacement and time. Therefore, do not order all materials at once and make sure they have a high and dry place to wait for use.
Inspections and Controls
No amount of preparation or intelligent storage will eliminate water damage risks. Therefore, mandatory inspections and water controls should take place from day one to identify and resolve potential problems quickly and without incident.
New commercial construction or renovation carries with it risks of water damage. However, with diligence and inspections for needed water pipe repair work, a project can significantly reduce those risks. Consult a remediation and construction expert to identify potential problems before work even begins.

It is our job to block and move your furniture during the restoration process.

When owning or managing a place of business, disasters are always in the back of your mind. What if something happens and you have to be closed for a significant amount of time? Something such as a water leak can do this to a place of business. So what can you do to prevent this from happening?

How To Prevent Water Damage At Your Commercial Property
7/1/2020 (Permalink)

Water Leaks In Your Business? We Can Help!
6/1/2020 (Permalink)
When you own or manage a place of business, disasters are always in the back of your mind. What if something might happen and you have to be closed for a significant amount of time? Something such as a water leak can do this to your place of business. So what are things you can do to prevent this from happening?
Check the usual suspects of a water leak.
]Appliances, pipes and drains, and the roof are these suspects. The older these things are, the more often you need to check them. When you are checking these items if you see something wrong, immediately get them fixed. Keep a close eye on lose hose connections and caulk areas since these are simple fixes. In addition, you should continue to update maintenance on all appliances and equipment. In regards to the outside of your place of business, keep the gutters free of debris. This will help reduce the likelihood of your roof being damaged.
In addition, you should look into SERVPRO’s ERP (Emergency Ready Profile) which goes into play when a disaster strikes your place of business. If you want to inquire about the ERP or have a disaster happen at your place of business, call us at (256)-378-1319, and we will make it look “Like it never even happened."
We Get You Back To Business After A Water Damage Disaster

Our crew arrives on site to assess and properly handle your commercial water damage as quickly as possible to prevent further damage.
Commercial Water Removal in a Retail Store
Water damage does billions of dollars in damages every year. Everything from small pipe leaks to water damage from firefighting efforts, to natural disasters such as floods, can do extensive damage to property. Without extensive mitigation, this can put businesses at risk of mold and other contaminants, which can affect the safety and comfort of your facilities.
If your business requires water removal services, the pros at SERVPRO are ready to handle it fast. This IICRC-certified team has the tools and techniques needed to assist business owners and restoring their property after a disaster occurs. Whether the damage is caused by pipes or other infrastructure issues, this is a crew you can count on to restore your facility to its preloss condition.
Protecting Your Facilities
- Be vigilant. Notice an uptick in water expenses? It may be a plumbing issue. Make sure to regularly inspect your building for damp areas and hire a certified professional to make the fixes required for your property.
- Prepare for disaster. Sandbags, sump pumps, and other preventive measures can go a long way towards protecting your business. Commercial water sensors can also detect and limit the amount of water damage that occurs in your facility by quickly alerting you to damage.
- Check openings and prepare them accordingly. This includes windows, doors, trim, and other gaps and cracks on your property. Use weatherstripping and waterproof caulking, as well as other measures for waterproofing your store.
How SERVPRO Helps Businesses
When SERVPRO comes to your business, they can get started right away on water extraction, drying, and disinfection for your property. If your retail store features carpet and other porous fabrics, SERVPRO back-mounted extractors and rovers can pull moisture out of the carpet and prevent the need for disposal with careful drying. Carpet, in many cases, can be saved from disposal if delamination--that is, the separation of pad from the carpet--has not occurred.
Air movers can be placed every 10 to 16 linear feet at 45-degree angles to dry the walls. If the ceiling is affected, technicians can move ceiling tiles to facilitate the removal of moisture through just a couple of openings. In open areas, plastic sheeting can be used to construct chambers for more effective drying in a contained space.

Commercial Mold Restoration
7/22/2019 (Permalink)
Many types of mold exist and all molds have the potential to cause health effects. However some mold is good- such as mold used in making blue cheese mold and mold used in the production of Penicillin. Some forms of mold can certainly cause health problems, but not all kinds of molds cause health problems in all people. Molds produce allergens, but not all people will have the sensitivity to react to the molds. However, those allergens can trigger allergic reactions or asthma attacks in people who are allergic to mold.
For mold to grow it takes moisture and oxygen. Mold can grow on any organic substance such as wood, paper, carpet, and foods.
It is impossible to eliminate all molds and mold spores in an indoor environment; however, mold growth can be controlled simply by controlling the moisture indoors.
If mold spores land on a damp spot indoors, they may begin growing and digesting whatever they are growing on in order to survive. Over time mold can gradually destroy the things they grow on if the mold is not remediated.
Today builders are making buildings that are tightly sealed, and can lack adequate ventilation which can potentially lead to moisture buildup. Since mold requires water to grow, it is important to prevent moisture problems in buildings. Building materials, such as drywall, may not allow moisture to escape easily. Moisture problems can be a result of roof leaks, landscaping and lack of timely maintenance of moisture problems.
It is important to address any water issues whether sudden or on-going in order to eliminate or at least minimize the need for mold remediation services. SERVPRO can provide free estimates for mold damaged commercial properties. Our Team has the experience and knowledge to get your affected business back in working order.

Processes To Expect During Commercial Water Damage Restoration
If you are a business owner, you certainly know how crucial it is to resume your normal operations after going through commercial water damage. The goal of this critical reminder is to help all business to stay in operation, know how to talk to their employees, as well as to protect their investment. Business owners should also learn how to set up a response team and back up valuable information.
We're going to look at an overview of the processes that our SERVPRO technicians perform when attending to commercial incidents in Minneapolis. Performing a thorough pre-inspection of the damaged area is the first thing we do when we arrive at the site. During this time, we record all dangerous situations such as sagging ceilings, electrical hazards and deteriorated walls and subfloors. We can then switch off the electrical power and if necessary perform demolitions to remove any possible hazards.
Depending on the depth, our SERVPRO team chooses appropriate pumps to remove standing water. We check for moisture in the crawl spaces, walls, and floors and use the necessary water extraction methods. When checking the level of water penetration in ceilings, walls, carpets, and floors, we make use of a moisture meter. We can also detach soaked carpets and perform water extraction from the pad and floor- there are chances of restoring the carpets when water is from a clean source. It is our job to block and move your furniture during the restoration process.

3 Steps to Follow after a Pipe Breaks
5/31/2019 (Permalink)
Significant water damage can bring your bustling business to a screeching halt. The main factor that determines how quickly you recover and get back to business as usual is your response time when you discover bursting pipes. The faster you can stop the problem, the better off you will be. Here are three things you can do to expedite the cleanup process.
1. Shut Off the Water
When professional technicians arrive to fix a broken pipe in your building, they can work faster if they have less water to contend with. The first thing you do, therefore, when you discover water damage is shut the water off at the source. Turn off the main water valve so the pipe does not continue to leak. It is also a good idea to shut off electricity in the area, particularly if the water is close to any outlets or equipment.
2. Call Professionals
After you shut down the water supply to the bursting pipes, contact SERVPRO of Talladega, Clay & Randolph Counties. They can help by conducting a thorough assessment of the problem and beginning the repair process. This process is not something you want to delay. Every minute that your commercial property sustains water damage is a minute when bacteria can multiply and mold can settle and grow. Timely restoration helps prevent further damage.
3. Alert Insurance
Once you have an estimate of what it costs to repair the damage, you should call your insurance company. An agent can explain what your policy covers. The company can also send an adjuster to survey the damage and decide what your claim is worth.
Water damage is not something anyone would wish on themselves. You can minimize the damage to your commercial property from bursting pipes if you cut the water off at the source and make arrangements to resolve it and pay for the resolution as quickly as possible.

Commercial Work
6/20/2017 (Permalink)
Boxes upon boxes upon boxes. We never know how many boxes to expect when we have commercial jobs. But before we know it, we will have a warehouse full of them. After all, when our customer has a water or fire event in his/her business, before we can start the clean up, we have to get everything else out of the way. This could mean moving couches or desks or even bookshelves full of collectibles; either way, smaller items have to be boxed up and stored away safely by our packing experts. If items have to be cleaned due to damage done to them in a water or fire event, commercial customer contents will have to be boxed initially on site, brought back to our warehouse, unboxed in order to be cleaned, and then boxed again once they have been detailed. Most days our warehouse is completely full of these boxes. Sometimes they stay stored in our warehouse for weeks and months if construction is necessary at the site of the damage after we do the initial mitigation work. We are grateful to help our customers in many ways. So let us do the heavy lifting and the packing for you. It's what we do!

Office Spring Cleaning
5/11/2017 (Permalink)
Spring has come and gone but if anyone is like me I still do spring cleaning when it isn't spring. and we want you to keep your business in good condition all year long! We want you to prevent mold, water leaks, and even fires!
In the meantime, here are some helpful tips about Spring-Cleaning for your OFFICE:
-Divide your work space into zones: Determine how you want and need to use the space and set up zones for your daily functions. You may require a work space for your computer, a library area for your research, a storage area for supplies and a filing area for your archives. This will provide a foundation for a more efficient use of space.
-Keep only what you need at arm's length: Boxes of pens, stacks of papers and old coffee cups need to go. Rid your desk of visual clutter by paring down the items on top to the essentials only. Supplies, paperwork and personal items should be kept in the zones you've establishes for them.
-Create a daily paper system: Consider creating hanging files or baskets labeled "to read," "to do," and "to file." Establish set days for each, so that you don't get behind or feel the overwhelming need to do everything at once.
-Sort your catch-all drawer: Use drawer dividers to give everything a place, like compartments for paperclips and rubber bands. Go through the drawer every six weeks and clear out anything that is out of place or isn't being used.
-Eliminate digital clutter: Digital clutter can be just as stressful as physical clutter. Organize digital files and your email inbox just as you would paper files- with a system of logical and clearly labeled folders. Also, keep the icons on your desktop to a bare minimum, and trade in sticky notes on your monitor for calendar reminders.
-Disinfect regularly: Prevent the buildup of dust, dirt, food stains and fingerprints. Wipe down your desk, phone, keyboard and monitor once a week with disinfecting wipes.
